Bulgaria President Backs Sofia 2014 Olympics Bid |
Bulgaria’s President Georgi Parvanov is firmly behind Sofia’s candidature to host the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.
Parvanov vowed his support at a meeting with Sports’ Agency Chief Vessela Lecheva and the chairwoman of the Bulgarian Olympic Committee (BOC) Stefka Kostadinova.
The meeting also focused on the forthcoming meeting of Lecheva and Kostadinova in Lausanne with the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Jacque Rogge.
Parvanov is to send a letter to Rogge vowing his support to Sofia’s candidature to host the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. Sofia’s candidature for the Winter Olympic Games and the meeting with Jacque Rogge were among the main topics of our discussion with President Parvanov, Vessela Lecheva said after the meeting.
Kostadinova explained that Sofia is a bit late to promote it self as a good Olympic host "therefore we should launch an active campaign."
The two sports’ chiefs will also meet Simeon Saxe-Coburg, former Prime Minister and leader of Simeon II National Movement (SIINM), part of the ruling coalition. They will seek the support of the ruling cabinet as well.
Bulgaria’s capital officially submitted its bid to host the XXII Winter Olympic Games in 2014 in July.
This is Bulgaria’s third bid to host the Olympic Games, following its failures in 1992 and 1994. Other potential bidders for 2014 include the Republic of Georgia, as well as Pyeongchang, South Korea; Salzburg Austria and Ostersund, Sweden.
